On 18 June, O&M relaunched CØR.restore, the professional in-salon repair system that sits behind a great deal of the colour work done in Australian salons. The relaunch is unusual in a way that is easy to miss: only half the system changed.
Part 1 stayed as it was. Part 2 was replaced outright. For a category that usually iterates everything at once and calls it a new generation, that is a deliberate, and quite confident, piece of product design — and it points at where the whole repair conversation is heading.
Travis Bandiera, O&M's Australian Artistic Director and a co-owner of Royals, has spent the months since taking the trade through the reworked system from the chair to the retail shelf.

What CØR.restore actually is
CØR.restore is a two-step professional treatment, not a single product. O&M describes it as "a complete two-step restoration ritual designed to deliver stronger hair, richer colour and longer-lasting results". The two halves do genuinely different jobs at genuinely different moments.
Part 1 — Amino Complex
Part 1 is not applied on its own. It is mixed into the colour, lightener, perm or straightening formula, so it is present in the bowl while the chemistry is happening. Its brief is to restore hair structure, improve moisture and flexibility, and protect the hair through processing.
This is the part that did not change, and there is a reasonable read on why: in-process protection is a solved problem. Every serious professional line has a version of it, the mechanism is well understood, and a reformulation for its own sake would have meant re-educating every colourist in the country about a step that was already doing its job.
Part 2 — Colour Lock Treatment
This is the rebuild. The previous Part 2 Balm has been retired and replaced by a ten-minute post-colour treatment that, in O&M's words, "repair[s], re-plump[s] and seal[s] the hair fibre, reducing colour fade and leaving hair softer, smoother and visibly healthier".
Note the order of those verbs. Repair, then re-plump, then seal. The sealing is the new emphasis, and it is where the second of the two named technologies lives.

The two technologies, and what they are each for
- AminoChain Technology™ — eleven essential amino acids that rebuild structure and strengthen elasticity. This is the repair half: putting material back into a fibre that lost some during processing.
- ChromaGard™ — a proprietary anti-fade complex drawn from soybean and pomegranate extracts, aimed at reducing colour fade. This is the retention half, and it is the genuinely new claim.
Repair versus retention: the shift worth noticing
For most of the last decade, the argument in professional hair care has been about repair — and specifically about bonds. Olaplex built a category on a patented chemistry that relinks severed disulfide bonds, the exact bonds that bleach breaks. K18 arrived with a biomimetic peptide derived from scanning the keratin genome, designed to slot into the gaps where the chain has broken down. Both are, at heart, structural arguments: the hair is damaged, here is how we put it back.
Those arguments are strong and they are not going away. But they answer a question most colour clients are not actually asking. The client in the chair rarely says "my disulfide bonds are compromised". She says her colour went brassy in five weeks and she does not want to come back that often.
Structural repair asks: how damaged is this hair? Retention asks: how long will what you paid for actually last? Those are not the same question, and only one of them is on the client's mind at the basin.
Pairing an amino-acid rebuild with a dedicated anti-fade complex is an answer to the second question as well as the first. That is what makes the Part 2 reformulation more interesting than a routine refresh — the system is being positioned against the client's actual complaint rather than against a competitor's mechanism.
Where it fits in a real appointment
The practical shape of it in the salon is straightforward:
- Part 1 goes into the formula before it goes on the hair. No extra chair time.
- The service runs as normal.
- Part 2 goes on after the colour, for ten minutes, at the basin.
Ten minutes is the number that matters commercially. It is short enough to sit inside an existing appointment rather than requiring a longer booking, which is usually the difference between a treatment that gets offered consistently and one that gets offered when the column is quiet.
Who it is genuinely for
Our honest view, from the floor:
- Anyone lifting. Highlights, balayage, any blonde work — the in-process protection earns its place before you even discuss the finish.
- Anyone whose colour fades faster than their regrowth arrives. This is the ChromaGard case, and it is a large group. If you are booking back in because of tone rather than roots, the problem is retention.
- Red and copper clients especially. Warm tones have the shortest half-life of anything we do. A fade-reduction claim matters more here than anywhere else on the colour wheel.
Who it is not a fix for: mechanical damage from heat styling, or hair that needs cutting rather than treating. No in-salon system repairs split ends — it can only improve the fibre that is still intact.
Common questions
Is CØR.restore a bond builder?
Not in the narrow sense that Olaplex is. Olaplex's chemistry directly relinks disulfide bonds. CØR.restore's AminoChain approach rebuilds structure with amino acids and strengthens elasticity, then adds a separate anti-fade complex. Related goals, different mechanisms.
Do I need to buy anything to take home?
No. Both parts are in-salon steps. Home care extends the result, but the system itself is applied in the chair.
Does it change my colour?
Not the shade you chose. The claim is about how long that shade stays looking the way it did when you left.
How often?
It belongs with the colour service, so its rhythm is your colour rhythm rather than a separate schedule.
